Letteracy : Lettering and Type Events in Fall

noun    |  let·ter·a·cy  |   \ ˈle-tər-re-se \
The combination of "Lettering" & "Literacy"
The state of being knowledgable in all letterform related art & design

When I was studying Graphic Design in school, my teacher gave everyone a typeface to research; Mine was Bodoni, and that's how my love for letterforms began. It was difficult at the time for me to find resources to learn more about "how" and "what" of it because it was not nearly as popular as it is today. So I taught myself what I could by watching videos or reading books. Luckily there's been a resurgence of appreciation on the artform. Now, there are endless workshops, videos and events happening all over the world. One thing I've learned by following many creatives I've admired is - as with any field and craft, if you want to be good, you have to dive into all aspects of it. Study it, practice it, play with it, and never stop learning. I try my best to keep up with them and so, as part of my ongoing education to myself, I also want to be able to share my findings with you.

Letteracy is an ongoing seasonal blog post on all letterform related art & design. Some of the events listed are classes that I have taken or interested in attending. If you know of any workshops, events, talks, or meet ups, feel free to email me, I'd love to add it to the list.

Find your community of people, and if it doesn’t exist, then build it. Invite people into it and expand it

New Bohemia Signs : "Introduction to Brush Lettering"

A great 2-day workshop in San Francisco that I've taken. Small group, informative, materials included and taught by some of the most talented sign painters in the area! You'll get to make a piece of your own at the end of the workshop too. Definitely give this one a try.

The process and my final sign at the end of the workshop.
